Dangers of Social Networking for Your Business

Businesses must understand the real dangers of social networking. It can be a great way to connect with customers and promote your brands and service, but it there are some things that you need to look out for when using social media.

Time Spent Managing Networks

Do not let the social networks take up too much of your time. Use available tools and applications to do things like schedule Twitter tweets and thank new followers. This will save you a great deal of time managing your networks. If it is still too much, don’t be afraid to outsource tasks to employees or hire a company to do it for you.

Don’t Give Out Too Much Information

You may know not to use your business Twitter account to give too much information about your daily activities, but you also want to be careful not to give out too much information about others either.

For example, do not Tweet something like “Sally Jones from Littleton, North Dakota just won our contest and will be gone next week on a trip for 2 to Hawaii!”

You just told everyone online that they will not be home next week! By giving out information about employees or customers…you could be putting them at risk as well.

Social Media Fraud

Be careful to guard your account and don’t click on links that you are unsure about.

For example: You could just be responding to someone who sent you a cool link. You click to check it out. You may have just got hacked. Now your Twitter account suddenly starts posting inappropriate tweets to all of your followers, asking them for money, promoting inappropriate products or worse.

How do you prevent being a victim of social media fraud?

Here are some tips:

  1. Get some top-of-the-line small business security software. Make sure it is installed on every piece of equipment that your company uses in its network. The program should be able to prevent viruses, block unwanted entry, protect privacy, and stop any malicious programs from downloading into the system. Make sure every employee is trained to use it.
  2. No not allow anyone on the network to use file-sharing programs or to download files from the internet without approval.
  3. Make sure someone is monitoring your social media accountsfor suspicious activity on a regular basis.
